What Accounting Software Should I Choose?

We hear this question a lot, and for good reason. When starting a new business (or, let’s face it, starting to track money in your home-based business for the first time), it can be daunting to select the right product. Or, if you are unhappy with the long-term use of one product, the thought of switching and facing the same issues makes it hard to even consider.

We have good news: There IS a right product for you! It just takes a little research to figure that out.

Many accountants believe Quickbooks (QB) Online is the only option, or the only “good” option. While this may be true for one company, it is not true for all of them. QB works great for many small businesses with very little accounting knowledge. It can transfer into Quicken tax programs seamlessly which is a huge plus for anyone doing their own taxes. There is flexibility in online packages (multiple users help enable good financial controls).

If this is working for you, GREAT! Keep it! Use it! Enjoy the simplicity and easy reporting tools. You have lots of options for bookkeeping services and technical support, which is a major plus!

But, obviously, this is NOT the right choice for everyone. Just like a good pair of sneakers fits some feet perfectly and will give blisters to another, so will an accounting software.

If you work freelance or as a solopreneurs, QB is NOT for you. If you’ve got a non-profit, you may have noticed QB’s reports, accounts, and interface don’t quite make sense for you (this is because they don’t change the software, but just relabel a few things, which, as you have likely discovered, does NOT make a good crossover). If you start to have more than fifty customers or vendors, things begin to get messy. If you have an extremely small budget and can’t afford to pay much (or anything) for your software right now, QB is likely well beyond your means. And, if you simply love desktop processing, but get frustrated at QB’s lack of attention to this area, you have options as well.
